I’m a serial entrepreneur based in Austin, Texas.
I’ve been building online businesses since 1996. One of my first web apps was a used book marketplace for my university– if only I’d had the foresight to turn it into half.com or Chegg!
I founded ApartmentRatings.com, the largest site for ratings and reviews of apartments online and used by over two million users per month. The site was acquired by Internet Brands (NASDAQ: INET) shortly before their IPO, and as a result, we got our logo displayed on the NASDAQ billboard the day of the IPO.
One of the keys to ApartmentRatings.com’s organic search (SEO) success was our ability to attract press coverage. However, compiling media lists, keeping track of coverage, and the logging the information necessary to manage hundreds of relationships with reporters, bloggers, and influencers consumed a huge amount of my time. I realized I wasn’t the only one having trouble managing personalized outreach at scale, so I teamed up with Paul May to start BuzzStream. It’s now the most popular tool used by link builders and blogger outreach professionals.
In 2013, I founded Written.com to help brands license content from bloggers. The company was created to close the gap between brands’ need for better content marketing results and the relatively few monetization options available for bloggers. When a brand hires us, Written’s platform finds existing blog content, performs automated outreach, prices licenses, manages the acceptance workflow, publishing, and redirects traffic.
